Huma Qureshi cannot control excitement as Army of the Dead wins Oscar Fan-Favourite Award

Director Zack Snyder’s zombie-heist movie Army of the Dead won the fan-favourite award at Sunday’s Oscar, and actor Huma Qureshi couldn’t contain her excitement. The actor was ecstatic as she played a consequential role in the movie as the supporting actor, named Geeta. The newly introduced unofficial category was judged on the basis of votes cast on Twitter.

To honor more mainstream and popular movies the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences collaborated with Twitter to introduce the category Oscar Fan Favourite Award. The winner in this category, however, doesn’t receive the Oscar trophy. Army of the Dead received the awards, beating other contenders, which were Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cinderella, Minamata, and Tick, Tick…Boom!

Huma took to her Instagram handle to celebrate the win, and thank the voters. The actor wrote “Omg! This just happened. We won an Oscar!! Thank you to the fans for voting. #ZackSnyder you are the boss @netflix Love to my cast mates and the whole crew!! #OscarFanFavorite #gratitude One step closer … thank you 2022.

Commenting on her role in the movie, she mentioned that she never picked movies based on the length of the character, but on the impact that the character has on the movie. Synder spoke praises of Huma’s role in the movie telling a leading publication, “She was written as an Indian character, and Huma is a really amazing actress, no two ways about it.”

Along with Huma Qureshi, the movie also starred Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick, and Matthias Schweighöfer. The story is based on members of a ragtag team of thieves infiltrating a zombie-infested zone. The movie was released on the streaming platform Netflix in May 2021. A sequel of the movie is currently being developed.
