Yami Gautam recalls being told by ‘high-end designers’, “That lehenga is not for you”

Yami Gautam has never been one to mince her words, and she has now spoken out about fashion designers in the film industry who do not treat all actors fairly. The actress, who looked stunning at her wedding a few months ago, says she chose her mother’s saree because she has had to deal with a few designers in the past, who are extremely picky about who they lend their outfits to.

She stated that, while she had designers on whom she could rely completely, there were still a few who acted with difficulty. In an interview with a leading news portal, she stated, “My wedding was an extension of my personality, and my core values. I am lucky to have a partner who thinks like me. Wedding is your day, you should do everything you feel like doing, which gives you happiness. No one should dictate that for you.”

She continued, “I’ve had the privilege to have some really good designers I can lean on. But, even in the fashion industry, there are some high-end designers who don’t give you their outfits because you are not so and so. It is the entire system. I remember I heard that about myself once. That person said, ‘No, that lehenga is not for you’, and I was like ‘What, why?!’, and they said, ‘No, just don’t work with that designer’. It was so mean. I don’t understand what the criteria is, how can you make someone feel so bad? But it’s not true for all designers, some of them are really good with their work and their attitude, but there is always a rotten apple.”

Yami revealed that this was the incident that motivated her to make a promise that she would never allow anyone to make her feel bad about herself again. And she had made up her mind that when it was her special day, she would do things her way. She had always planned to wear her mother’s saree to her wedding because she feels so strongly connected to that emotion.

“That’s when I decided to never allow anyone to make me feel bad about myself. You are doing great in whatever you’re doing, and never try to fit in someone’s ‘attire’,” said Yami.
