India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden won the grand slam championship at the Australian Open 2024, defeating Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the men’s doubles final at Melbourne Park. Rohan Bopanna, 43, has become the oldest grand slam winner, having just risen to the top of the ATP men’s doubles rankings.

Bopanna’s only Grand Slam title came at the 2017 French Open. The Karnataka native and Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Robert Farah in mixed doubles.

Martina Navratilova is the oldest Grand Slam winner in tennis’ Open Era history. At the age of 49, the former Czech-American player won the 2006 US Open mixed doubles title with Bob Bryan.

Bopanna is the fourth Indian to win a Grand Slam championship, following Paes, Bhupathi, and Mirza, and joins the list of famous tennis players who received the coveted Padma Shri Award on Thursday.
